Highlights

  • Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) is activated in TiZrHfNb high entropy alloys.
  • Metastable BCC and cryogenic temperature are two prerequisites for triggering TWIP.

  • Hierarchical {332}twinning networks dominate the deformation process.

  • {112}twins tend to be activated inside primary {332}twin bands.

  • The strength-ductility can be regulated by adjusting the niobium content at 77 K.
